Women’s Center Feminist Art Mural Contest

Exciting news! We have a scholarship opportunity for designing and painting a mural in the Women’s Center. Students are invited to submit proposed designs for a mural on the Women’s Center Multi-Purpose Room SU 417 29 FT X 7 FT.  One design may be selected by the University in accordance with the guidelines below to be painted by the creator in the Women’s Center multi-purpose room.  The creator(s) of the selected design will receive a $1000 scholarship. If a team is involved, the scholarship will be divided equally among the members.

 Submissions are open from 1/12/26, to end of the day on 2/28/26. Late submissions will not be accepted.   

A committee composed of representatives from the Women’s Center will evaluate each proposal and select finalists. The Director will review the finalists and select one awardee, at the Director’s discretion, to be painted in the Women's Center Multi-Purpose room.  

 The chosen awardee(s) will have 2 weeks to complete painting of the mural, with additional time possible upon request. 

Guidelines:

  • Elements taken into account on the design. 
  • Include the theme of Women's Center legacy and future: Promoting gender equity, the future we are building, and its mission of education, advocacy, and support. 
  • Relevant to the Women's Center's mission and legacy. 
  • Only one submission per student or group of up to 5 students. 
  • Include a 150-word narrative explaining the design/theme. 
  • Include a 2-3 minute video explaining the piece and what it means. 
  • Submit designs in PDF format with landscape orientation on 11" X 17" paper. 
  • Proposed cost assessment of materials including paints, brushes, drop clothes, pencils, sponges, etc.  
  • The mural must be able to sustain for a minimum lifetime of 25 years. Notwithstanding, the University reserves the right to remove, replace, paint over and/or modify the mural at any time.  
  • Do not paint over or on the ADA Accessible Handicap button or the fire alarm. 
  • Obtain prior approval if using a ladder or lift. 
  • Clearance from the Women’s Center, with the advice of Trademark Management, is required for incorporating any UConn logo. 
  • To be eligible, each participant (including, if applicable, each member of a team) must be currently registered as a student at the University.   
  • All submitted work must be the original work of the entrant(s) and must not include, be based on, or derived from any pre-existing or third-party designs, trademarks, or copyrighted images. 
  • All submitted work must not include any AI images.  
  • Each entrant agrees that any and all intellectual property rights in the submitted work are deemed assigned to the University.  Additional terms are provided below.
  • The University reserves the right to not select finalist(s) and/or a winning entry, if in its sole discretion, no suitable entries are received.  

Ownership and Intellectual Property Rights

 

  1. Representations, Warranties, and Indemnification.   By submitting your entry, you represent and warrant that your entry (including, all submitted work and designs) (hereinafter, the “entry”) is your original work and does not include, is not based on, and is not derived from any pre-existing or third-party designs, trademarks, or copyrighted images.  You agree to indemnify and hold the University harmless from any and all claims, actions, losses, damages, costs, expenses, and liabilities arising out of or related to your entry or any breach of your representations and/or warranties herein.  
  2. Ownership and Assignment of Intellectual Property Rights.  You agree that your entry shall be a “work made for hire” under U.S. copyright law with all intellectual property rights therein, including without limitation, the exclusive copyright, being the property of the University. In the event the entry is deemed not to be a “work made for hire” under applicable law, you hereby irrevocably assign and transfer to the University all right, title, and interest in and to your entry (including, without limitation, any and all intellectual property rights therein).  Where applicable, you agree to execute and deliver such additional written documentation as may be reasonably requested by the University in connection with the foregoing. 
  3. Governing Law.  These terms shall be construed in accordance with and governed by the laws of the State of Connecticut without regard to its conflict of laws principle.
