Katherine Hynes

Katherine is graduating from UConn Avery Point with a degree in English and a minor in History. A member of the Tau Sigma Honors Society and a member of the Avery Point Creative Writing Club, Katherine is also a Babbidge Scholar who has made the Dean’s List, and her work has been featured in the Avery Point Literary Journal. Katharine Capshaw, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in CLAS and Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, an Associate Professor of English and the director of Maritime Studies at UConn Avery Point, notably recognize Katherine as an “invaluable member of the Avery Point Campus community.”

A former Avery Point Academic Center Tutor and former Head Writing Fellow at Avery Point, Katherine has also participated in a Public History internship with the Connecticut Blue Heritage Trail in efforts to enlighten an audience about Connecticut’s marine environment and maritime heritage. Her work is to appear in the IZI travel app, which is a story telling platform to connect cities and museums to bring their stories to life. Katherine’s contributions to this field run deep– after a great experience in an internship with Mystic Seaport Museum, she has continued on as an independent contractor researching, copywriting, and copyediting content for their exhibits. At the forefront of this project, Katherine’s fieldwork and research that she has been working on closely with Dr. James Carlton, a leading marine ecologist expert on introduced species, will be displayed as scientific literature in the exhibit and river trail.

After graduating, Katherine plans to use her English degree to become a copywriter and content editor. While she hopes to someday work at a publishing house, her greatest dream is to become a published novelist.
