Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2024

What is SAAM

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) occurs every year in April to raise awareness about sexual assault and promote survivor support.  This cause is promoted across the nation by different organizations and groups to show their support.  The UConn Women’s Center has participated in SAAM for years, each time making it more accessible to our community.  The theme we chose for SAAM 2024 is “It takes a village” because we want survivors to feel a sense of community in their healing journey.  Everybody needs to have their village to support them during this time whether it is friends, family, or other survivors.  This year we are planning to have a kickoff event to welcome people into our community and start spreading awareness and support at the start.  We have a variety of events planned throughout the month with each week having two events.  Towards the end of the month, we will be throwing one of the Women’s Centers biggest events; Take Back The Night.  Please join us in our fight to diminish sexual assault on our campus.

Take Back The Night

The Women’s Center’s biggest event of the spring, Take Back The Night (TBTN) is an event for survivors and allies to come together in a community of growth and healing. This year, the theme of TBTN is ‘It Takes a Village’, highlighting the importance of community when it comes to healing from a sexual assault. We will have two fantastic speakers, a march to reclaim the darkness, and a candlelight vigil in honor of those who did not make it.

Hospital Bags

This fundraiser is an opportunity to help show support to survivors of sexual assault.  These bags will be offered to survivors who seek out an examination kit so that they have the supplies they need to feel comfortable.  Each bag will have a change of clothes, hygiene wipes and products, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and more. Every donation will contribute to obtaining the supplies and assembling these bags.  We are collaborating with SHaW and their Safe Nurses in order to distribute the supplies.

Denim Day

Denim Day is a worldwide stance against victim blaming related to sexual assault. The Italian Supreme Court ruled against a survivor of sexual assault by using their tight jeans as a reason to overturn their case. Join us by wearing denim to show your support of survivors.  For Denim Day, stop by our tabling event and take a photo in your denim day outfit!  We also will have a community resource table that includes a variety of options for survivors and allies!
