Snehaa Ray

Snehaa is pursuing her Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences. Her dedication to her field of study is reflective in her named award. In May of 2020, she was awarded Outstanding Graduate in the Department of Food and Nutrition Sciences at Ohio University.

Snehaa dedicates her time in both understanding and improving the lives of others through a health and dietary lens. Her dissertation focuses on the behavioral weight loss intervention in overweight and obese postpartum Black women in the United States. However, her reach extends outside the country as well; she is a part of the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme, a government organization that operates in the developing states of India. Through this program, she assess the health and nutritional status of expecting mothers and children from different rural areas. She then works closely with these mothers on healthy low-cost recipes for themselves and their families.

Snehaa has many interests– but most notably, she enjoys Indian classical singing, and Kathhak, which is a form of Indian classical dance. She also enjoys learning different languages, and can speak Bengali and Hindi apart from English. Currently, she is learning Spanish.

Snehaa plans to become a public health nutritionist after completing her PhD. Her focus will reside in improving nutrition outcomes in women from developing countries, specifically in India, where thousands of pregnant women and children have poor nutritional status. She hopes to design and implement nutrition interventions that will promote weight maintenance through healthy eating behaviors.
