Amelia is a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences graduating with bachelor’s degrees in marine sciences and anthropology. She has pursued this double degree amongst two UConn campuses—an impressive feat that exemplifies her commitment to intellectual curiosity and academic excellence.

Her numerous honors include receiving the UConn IDEA Grant, making the Dean’s List, and being a Babbidge Scholar, New England Scholar, and 2020 University Scholar. For her University Scholar research project, she has worked with a team of advisors, one of whom says Amelia’s data and interpretations are worthy of a master’s degree thesis. She also blends her two areas of study in her honors thesis: “Linking Human Activities to Coastal Water Quality in Southern New England: Past and Present.”

Outside of research, Amelia has been active in in the SCUBA Club and Marine Sciences Club. She has also dedicated herself to making the Anthropology Club more popular amongst other students, and through her involvement, she has inspired other undergraduate students to investigate marine sciences as another major or minor.

She was the first student in the marine sciences program to receive a prestigious internship at the NASA Student Airborne Research Program, which provides hands-on research opportunities to advanced undergraduate students. Making this achievement even more notable, Amelia participated in the program’s high school education outreach component: the STEM Enhancement in Earth Science Program. Her experience inside and outside of the classroom brings truth to the words of Professor Katharine Capshaw, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: “She represents the best of the University of Connecticut.” After graduating, Amelia plans on continuing to pursue research and work towards a Ph.D.
