Tawana is graduating with a bachelors in science from the School of Nursing as an excellent honors student. As a participant of the Urban Service Track/AHEC scholar, Tawana is regarded as having “demonstrated high achievement in research and service to not only the University community, but also underserved communities within Connecticut.”
Her honors thesis is reflective of this; she has dedicated her time in researching and analyzing data regarding diabetes in the homeless population. Working through the Yale New Haven Hospital, Tawana investigates the prevalence of diabetes in patients admitted to the Medical Respite Program at Columbus House and is currently preparing an article on her research for Public Health Nursing with Barbara O’Neil and Michael Ferry, a social worker at the hospital, as co-authors. She plans to share her research through a poster presentation.
Her professionalism and consistent work ethic carries into her involvement as an Urban Service Track/AHEC (UST) scholar. She is an active participant in events and is currently serving as the secretary for their Geriatrics Interest Group. On campus, Tawana has also served as a secretary for Global Health Spaces, taking her time to facilitate much needed conversations on global health.
Tawana looks forward to working as a registered nurse for a few years before advancing her education. She plans to continue participating in community services where she can greatly impact the lives of underserved populations.
